Death of a Salesman was a great book for a play. Last year i read 12 Angry Men, which was also a play. I more so enjoyed this book than 12 Angry Men. This book is about a old man, Willy, who works as a traveling salesman. As the book goes on Willy learns how much his life had been a failure. His wife, Linda finds many signs of suicide but will not confront Willy. Willy hopes that his two sons will live a better life. Willy ends up killing himself near the end of the book beacuse he had no hope in his life. This was a great book for so little pages.
I thought that Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller is one of the greatest plays that I have ever read. It is a tragic story of an ordinary man, Willy Loman, who refuses to accept the fact that the simple life that he has is enough. He feels that he must constantly embellish his life so that he appears to be something he is not. The story begins when Willy returns home from a sales trip in which he cannot remember part of the drive home. This is foreshadowing of what is to happen at the end of the play. Willy has been a traveling salesman for all of his adult life, but has never succeeded at the same level as his friends and family members. At the end of his life, he is not even making enough money to pay his bills. Willy’s wife Linda is a loyal woman. She supports Willy in every thing he does. She is constantly trying to boost his self confidence. Even though she must know that some of the stories Willy tells are not true, she never confronts him. More than anything else, she wants her husband to be happy and content. Linda and Willy have two sons, Biff and Happy. Neither of the children have lived up to the image that Willy created. Because Biff was a good football player, Willy let him get away with everything including stealing and failing Math class. That prevented Biff from graduating from high school and attending college. Most recently Biff has been living out west, far from his family. He has also spent three months in jail for stealing. Happy is content living at home, working a menial job and dating a lot of women, even those who are engaged or married to his friends. He is trying to live up to what his dad considers to be success- being well liked. Willy has hallucinations through out the play which help us understand the past. He has many regrets such as not joining his brother in Alaska, and having an affair with a woman in Boston. Towards the end of the play, we find out that Biff actually caught his father having this affair. This is the major reason their relationship is so bad. Linda discovers that Willy has connected a hose to the gas furnace in the basement. He wants to kill himself. After the day Willy comes home and does not remember driving, Linda convinces him to go ask Howard, his boss, for a sales territory that is closer to home. Instead of giving Willy this, Howard fires him. Willy thinks that he can be happy at last if only Biff can be successful. He forces his son to go ask an employer from his past for money so he and Happy can start a sporting goods store. This plan fails too. All of this failure is just too much for Willy. He gets into a fatal car crash. What makes this even sadder is the fact that on the day he dies Linda had made the final house payment. Debt would not be such an issue anymore. She is so disappointed in her husband that she can not even cry at his death. But what I find ever more tragic is that basically no one attends Willy Loman’s funeral. This was a man who tried his whole life to be well-liked because he thought that would bring success and happiness
